Loreto è un piacevole paesino di circa 6000 abitanti situato 340Km a nord di La Paz, 420Km a nord di Cabo San Lucas e 135 Km a sud di Mulegé. Attorniato da montagne desertiche di rocce rosse, si affaccia sul Mar di Cortez, con una bellissima vista sull'Isla Coronado e l'Isla del Carmen. | Loreto is a nice small town with a population of about 6000, located 210 miles north of La Paz, 260 miles north of Cabo San Lucas and 84 miles south of Mulegé. Surrounded by desert mountains of red rocks, fronts the Sea of Cortez, with a beautiful view of Isla Coronado and Isla del Carmen. |

Loreto ha un aereoporto, con voli Aeroméxico da Los Angeles (via Tijuana) e da La Paz. L'alternativa é affittare una macchina all'aeroporto di La Paz o di Cabo San Lucas e di guidare fino a Loreto. La strada é in buone condizioni ed il tragitto può essere percorso in circa 6 o 7 ore, tenendo conto delle molte soste che si fanno per ammirare il panorama. | Loreto has its airport, with Aeroméxico flights from Los Angeles (via Tijuana) and La Paz. Another possibility is to rent a car at La Paz or Los Cabos airports and drive up to Loreto. The road is in good condition. It takes 6 to 7 hours to get there, depending on how many stops you'll make to enjoy the landscape. |
| Loreto | E' stato il primo insediamento europeo permanente nelle Californie, con la fondazione della Missione Nuestra Señora de Loreto nel 1697. A Loreto ci sono albergi per tutti i gusti, da 30$ a 300$. Anche le sistemazioni più economiche offrono stanze confortevoli con servizi ed aria condizionata, fondamentale in estate quando la temperatura supera i 40°C. Anche per i ristoranti c'è ampia scelta. Tutti offrono un'ottima cucina messicana, con prezzi molto contenuti (10$-20$). Se pianificate di andare in inverno, tenete presente che la temperatura cala molto durante la notte (8°C). | With the establishment of Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto in 1697, Loreto became the first permanent European settlement in the Californias. There are several hotels from 30$ up to 300$. Also in the cheapest you can have comfortable rooms with hot showers and air-conditioning, very important in summer with temperatures over 106°F. There are many restaurants too, all with excellent Mexican food. Average prices from 10$ to 20$. If you are planning to go in winter, remember that temperature drops down in the night (46°F). |
Diving |
Ci sono 3 o 4 diving centers. Il diving è abbastanza caro paragonato agli
altri costi. Un'uscita per due immersioni costa mediamente 75$ e dura tutta la mattinata e oltre,
a seconda delle distanze da percorrere. Le barche sono piccole ma veloci e portano 4 o 6 divers al massimo. Il mare di fronte a Loreto è racchiuso dall'Isla Coronado, l'Isla del Carmen e altre minori; è quasi sempre piatto e offre molti posti per immergersi. Sull'Isla Coronado vive una colonia di leoni marini e in estate è facile incontrarli. La visibilità varia di giorno in giorno ed è condizionata dalle molte correnti a temperatura diversa che si incontrano. Nell'agosto '99 ho trovato una temperatura massima di 29°C in superficie e minima di 24°C a -30 metri, ma ricordo temperature più alte nell'estate '91. La fauna marina è abbondante e interessante. Sicuramente un posto diverso in cui vale la pena immergersi. |
There are 3 or 4 Diving Centers. Diving is expensive compared to average costs of this place. A 2 tanks boat ride is about 75$ and takes all morning and more, depending on how far you go. Boats are small but fast, with no more than 4 to 6 divers per boat. The sea facing Loreto is enclosed by Isla Coronado, Isla del Carmen and others smaller islands, and normally is flat, offering several good diving spots. On Isla Coronado there is a colony of sea lions and is very easy to meet them in summer. Visibility underwater changes every day, depending on submarine currents with different temperatures that you can find. In August '99 the maximum temperature I found on surface was 84°F with a minimum of 75°F at -100 feet, but I remember higher temperatures in summer '91. Marine life is abundant and interesting. Diving here is something different, and it's worth the money. |
