Le foto degli squali grigi sono state scattate in Sudan, a Sha'ab Rumi e Sanganeb, sul lato sud dei reefs,
su pianori tra i 22 ed i 28 metri. I martelli, invece, stavano lungo la parete di questi reef ad oltre 50 metri di profondità,
dove l'acqua era più fredda ed anche più torbida, come testimoniano le poche foto che accludo.
La maggior parte delle altre foto sono state scattate, in diverse occasioni, a Cuba, vicino a Cayo Anclitas,
nei Giardini della Regina. Ho raccolto in queste pagine anche le foto di altri esemplari, scattate in varie località.

Photos of Grey Reef Sharks were shot in Sudan, at Sha'ab Rumi and Sanganeb, in the southern side of these reefs,
on plateau between 70 and 90 feet. Hammerheads stayed deeper, below 150 ft., along the wall, where waters were colder and
visibility very poor, as you can see from the few photos enclosed.
Many of the other photos were shot, on several occasions, in Cuba, around Cayo Anclitas, in the Jardines de
la Reina. I grouped in these pages also pictures of different sharks, shot in several locations. I'll upgrade these pages
as soon as I have new photos to add. |

La prima volta che mi immersi in questa zona, nel Maggio '99, fui sorpreso dalla grande quantità di squali che
ci nuotavano attorno, per nulla aggressivi o spaventati. Scoprimmo più tardi che nelle vicinanze, nascosto fra le
mangrovie, c'era un piccolo albergo galleggiante. Probabilmente gli squali erano abituati alla presenza dei subacquei
ed a qualche forma di sharks feeding. Nel Giugno 2000 ho avuto la fortuna di ripassare da quelle parti. Sono andato
all'albergo per avere maggiori informazioni, ma il proprietario era via. Un lavoratore però mi ha dato le coordinate
per trovare due buoni punti di immersione. Nel primo, poco distante, c'era un'infinità di squali che subito ha
attorniato la barca. Sul fondo, oltre gli squali, c'erano enormi cernie, tarponi e carangidi. La visibilità era
mediocre e gli squali stavano a qualche metro senza avvicinarsi. Finita l'immersione mi sono tolto le bombole, ho cambiato il
rullino fotografico e sono tornato in acqua in apnea, mentre dalla barca tiravano pezzi di pesce agli squali. Lo spettacolo
è stato fantastico, mentre gli squali nuotavano velocissimi attorno a me, alla ricerca dei bocconi.
Il secondo posto è situato di fronte a Cayo Boca de la Piedra de Pilotos, fra Pasa Piedra Grande e Pasa Piedra
Chiquita: il tempo di ormeggiare, e già alcuni squali, più grandi dei precedenti, nuotavano attorno alla
barca. Siamo scesi sul reef a 25 metri, seguiti da due squali di circa 2 metri. Nel reef si aprivano profondi canyons,
fino alla profondità di 50 metri. Qui ci siamo fermati, lungo la parete a strapiombo. Più sotto, a circa
60/65 metri, sostava un nutrito branco di grossi squali, che non ho identificato. Abbiamo atteso qualche minuto che
risalissero, ma solo uno ha fatto una rapida puntata, senza lasciarmi il tempo di scattare neanche una foto. Durante la
risalita abbiamo incontrato murene, aquile di mare, kingfish, dog snapper, oltre alla solita moltitudine di pesci che
abitano le acque cubane. Alcuni reef sharks ci hanno accompagnato per tutta la risalita fino alla superficie. |
The first time I dove this area, in May '99, I was surprised by the number of sharks swimming around us, showing no
fear or aggressiveness. Later we were told that there was a small 'floating hotel', hided in the mangroves, not so far
from that place. So we understood sharks were accustomed to divers and to some sort of sharks feeding. In June 2000 I had
the chance to sail again in that area, so I went to the hotel to get some more information about that strange abundance
of sharks. The owner was not there, but I found a worker and I got coordinates for two good diving places. In the first
one, few miles from the hotel, a great number of sharks surrounded the boat as soon as we arrived. When I reached the
bottom, I found, besides sharks, many big jewfish, tarpons and jacks. Visibility was not good and sharks stayed few
meters from me, too far for good pictures. When I surfaced, I took off tanks, I put a new film in my camera and I entered
again in the water, while my fiends from the boat started throwing some bites of fish to sharks. The show was something
I'll never forget. Sharks were swimming like darts around me, fighting for bites.
The second place is located in front of Cayo Boca de la Piedra de Pilotos, between Piedra Grande channel and Piedra Chiquita
channel. Just the time to moor, and already few sharks, bigger than in the previous place, were swimming around the boat.
We dove and reached the reef which starts at 82 ft, followed by two sharks about 6 ft long. Reef is cut by deep canyons till
the depth of 165 ft, where we stopped along the perfectly vertical wall. Deeper below us, at about 200/215 ft, a school of
big sharks, which I didn't identified, was peacefully swimming. We waited few minutes for them to come up, but only one made
a quick swim towards me, so fast that I hadn't time enough to set my camera. While we were surfacing we met morays,
spotted eagle rays, kingfish, huge dog and cubera snappers, besides all the usual fish living in the Cuban waters. Few
Reef Sharks followed us till the surface. |
