La via più comoda passa da Manado, raggiungibile sia da Singapore che da Kuala Lumpur. A Manado bisogna pernottare, perché il volo successivo per Luwuk, con la linea aerea Merpati, è programmato per le 7:00 del mattino. La Merpati non è famosa per la sua puntualità: ritardi della partenza non sono rari. Di solito la compagnia avvisa l'albergo dove sarete alloggiati di eventuali cambiamenti d'orario, ma è consigliabile chiedere alla reception dell'albergo di chiamare gli uffici della Merpati per avere conferma dell'orario di partenza, onde evitare inutili attese all'aeroporto.
Il volo per Luwuk dura un'ora. Qui vi aspetterà una machina per il trasferimento a Pagimana, punto di imbarco per Walea. I chilometri sono pochi, ma si devono superare delle colline, per cui ci vuole circa un'ora e mezza di viaggio, con alcune soste per ammirare il paesaggio e per far scorta di frutta e verdura fresca nei villaggi.
A Pagimana vi imbarcherete su una barca veloce, che in una sola ora coprirà le 30 miglia che separano Walea dalla terra ferma. Uscendo dal porto, non dimenticate di guardare, sulla vostra sinistra, un villaggio Bajou, i famosi "zingari del mare", una popolazione nomade oggi quasi ovunque stanziale, ma che vive tutt'ora sulle imbarcazioni. Una sola ora, come ho detto, è siete (finalmente!) arrivati.
The most comfortable way is via Manado, which is reachable from Singapore as well as from Kuala Lumpur. At Manado it is necessary to overnight, because the flight to Luwuk is due to take off at 7:00 am. Punctuality is not Merpati's strong point: delays are rather common. The company usually informs the hotel you're staying at, of any possible change in the timetable, but you'd better ask the hotel reception to call up Merpati's bureau to be sure of the timetable, in order to avoid a useless and boring wait at the airport.
The flight to Luwuk lasts one hour. At Luwuk a car will be waiting for you for the transfer to Pagimana, boarding point to Walea. There are only a few miles to get there, but the territory is very hilly and so it will take about one hour and a half. There will be some stops to let you take a look at the beautiful landscape and to get some fresh fruit and vegetables supplies in the villages.
At Pagimana you will board a fast boat, which, in just one hour, crosses the 30 miles that separate Walea from the dry land. Leaving the port, don't forget to take a look, on you left, at a Bajou village: the Bajou are the famous sea gypsies, a nomadic tribe which is nowadays mostly resident, but which keeps on living on boats. One more hour, and you'll be arrived (at last!).
Resort
L'atmosfera generale è molto informale ed amichevole: è abitudine mangiare tutti assieme, alla stessa ora, in due lunghe tavolate. Il menu, molto curato, cambia ogni giorno e prevede sia piatti tipicamente italiani (memorabili le tagliatelle fatte a mano) che piatti indonesiani, spesso arricchiti da un tocco 'europeo'.
Tutto il personale ha la gentilezza ed il sorriso tipici di queste genti e molti parlano un discreto italiano. Un solido pontile in legno porta ad una piattaforma che si affaccia sulla parete del reef. Una larga scala facilita l'entrata e l'uscita dall'acqua. D'estate questa zona è completamente riparata dal monsone e il mare è piatto, rendendo questa località adatta anche chi fa snorkeling o semplici nuotate.
Ogni settimana vengono organizzate escursioni nell'isola o al villaggio. A richiesta, si può fare un'escursione, con due immersioni, all'isola di Dondola, al limite estremo del parco marino che circonda Walea.
The general atmosphere is very informal and friendly: usually, the guests have their meals all together, sitting at two long tables. The menu is made with care: it changes every day and plans both typical Italian food (you'll never forget "tagliatelle", home made egg pasta) and Indonesian specialities, often enriched with a European touch.
The staff has the typical smile and kindness of local people and some of them can even speak Italian quite well. A solid wooden jetty leads to a platform which overlooks the reef. A large staircase helps getting into and out of the water. In summer this area is protected from the monsoon and the sea is flat, fitting this resort also for those who just want to go snorkelling or have a swim.
Every week, easy walks in the island or to the main village are arranged. By request, it is possible to spend a full day, including two dives, by the island of Dondola, at the farthest limits of the marine park surrounding Walea.

Tutti i punti di immersione vengono raggiunti con barche veloci, in pochi minuti. Ci si immerge sia su reef sommersi, battuti da corrente, per l'incontro di specie pelagiche, che lungo le pareti dei molti reef semi-affioranti, che abbondano nelle acque circostanti Walea e che sono ricchi di specie tipiche di questo ecosistema. Per gli amanti della macrofotografia, vengono anche organizzate immersioni su pendii di sabbia e corallo, lungo le coste dell'isola. Non va dimenticato l'house reef, una parete che raggiunge i 45 metri di profondità, che inizia proprio sotto al pontile, dove è quasi sempre visibile un banco di carangidi che riposa all'ombra della piattaforma. La parete ospita anche due gruppi di pesci mandarino (Synchiropus spendidus).
Le immersioni sono così organizzate:
- 8:00-8:30: partenza per la prima immersione. Ritorno al resort verso le 10:30;
- 14:00-14:30: partenza per la seconda immersione. Ritorno al resort verso le 16:30;
- 18:30 partenza per la notturna.
La temperatura dell'acqua, in Agosto, è di 28°/29°C.
Every dive site is reached by fast boats in a few minutes. It is possible to dive both on submerged reefs, hit by strong current, in order to search for pelagic species and along many surfaced reef barriers, which are rather numerous in the sea surrounding Walea and which are very rich in typical species of this ecosystem. Dives on sand and coral slopes, along the island coast, are arranged for those who love macrophotography. The house reef is not to be forgotten: its wall precipitates to a depth of 150 ft. It starts right under the jetty, where a school of caranx, resting under the platform, is almost always visible. The wall also hosts two groups of beautiful Mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus).
Dives are planned as following:
- 8:00 - 8:30: leaving for the first dive. The return is planned at about 10:30;
- 2:00 - 2:30 pm: leaving for the second dive. The return is planned at about 4:30 pm;
- 6:30 pm: leaving for the night dive.
The water temperature, in August, is 82°/84°F.
