I Giardini della Regina sono un gruppo di piccole isole per la maggior parte disabitate che si estende per circa 140 miglia nella parte Sud-Est di Cuba. Formano un cordone di isole interrotto da stretti canali. Sul lato sud il reef sprofonda quasi sempre ad un primo gradino fra i -30 metri ed i -40 metri, mentre il lato nord, rivolto verso Cuba, ha un fondale basso che degrada dolcemente. 150 miglia più a ovest c'è Cayo Largo. | Jardines de la Reina (Queen's Gardens) is a group of small islands, mostly inhabited, extending for about 140 miles in the South Eastern part of Cuba. They make an almost uninterrupted barrier, with small channels between the islands. The reef, on the Southern side, normally drops to a first step at a depth between -100 ft. and -130 ft., while Northern side, facing Cuba, has shallow water slowly degrading. Cayo Largo lays 150 miles West. |

Il miglior modo per visitare queste isole è affittare una barca. Chiedete informazioni alla vostra agenzia. Esistono anche due resorts, ma non conosco la qualità del servizio. Cayo Largo, invece, è collegato all'Avana con voli regolari. Ha alberghi, ristoranti e diving centers. Io sono stato in barca, e non ho informazioni sulle strutture a terra. | The best way to visit these islands is live-aboard. Ask your travel agency for information. There are also two resorts, but I have not been there and I ignore how they are. Cayo Largo, on the contrary, is well connected with Havana by daily flights. There are few hotels, restaurants and diving centers. I have been on board and have no information about land based activities. |
| 'Agua Mala' | Che cos'è? Letteralmente 'acqua cattiva'. In pratica qualche organismo urticante che galleggia in superficie e che procura fastidiose infiammazioni, spesso localizzate in corrispondenza delle ghiandole linfatiche. Si manifesta con arrossamenti, gonfiori ed un forte prurito. L'abbiamo trovata quasi ovunque nel mese di maggio con non pochi disagi. La miglior cosa da fare quando ci si sente pungere, è uscire immediatamente dall'acqua e lavare la zona colpita con abbondante aceto. Nei casi più gravi è meglio prendere degli antistaminici. Come precauzione conviene ungersi con qualche crema grassa prima di indossare la muta. | What's this? Literally 'bad waters.' Practically some stinging organism floating on surface who can cause nasty inflammations, often connected to lymphatic glands. It manifest himself with reddening, pustules and a crazy itch. We found it almost everywhere in May, and it was a troublesome problem. The best thing to do when you feel stung is jump out from the water and rinse with abundant vinegar (it's never too much). In case of serious problems, you can consider to use some antihistaminic cream or pill. A good precaution is to grease yourself with some oily cream before wearing your wetsuit. |
Diving |
Ho fatto immersioni nelle seguenti località: Giardini della Regina: Caguama, Cayo Boca Rica, Cayo Anclitas, Cayo Ingles. Cayo Largo: Ballenatos, Cabeza de Estopa. Le pareti più belle a volte iniziano oltre i -30 metri e non sempre è facile trovare il posto giusto per immergersi. La visibilità era ridotta dall'abbondante sospensione (10/12 metri). Diventava ottima oltre i -35 metri. Il reef, prima della parete, spesso è solcato da canyons che creano veri e propri labirinti abitati da tarponi, cernie giganti e da un'incredibile quantità di pesci. Si incontrano molti reef sharks, squali seta e altri grossi squali in parete. La temperatura dell'acqua è stata costante a 29°C. |
I dived in the following locations: Jardines de la Reina: Caguama, Cayo Boca Rica, Cayo Anclitas, Cayo Ingles. Cayo Largo: Ballenatos, Cabeza de Estopa. The best walls often start below 100 ft. and we spent a lot of time to find the right place to dive. Visibility was reduced to 30/40 ft. by abundant suspended particles, but below 115 ft. it was perfect. In many places, before the wall, canyons cut the reef creating beautiful labyrinths inhabited by tarpons, giant groupers and an incredible quantity of fishes. Encounters with reef sharks, silk sharks and other big sharks (along the wall) are very common. Water temperature was the same at any depth: 84°F. |
